CX Journal 2: We put Indonesia and Singapore’s immigration to the test - the surprises will shock you

Ever landed at an airport, eyes bleary, and just prayed for a fast escape to your hotel or hawker meal? That’s me, every time. So, on two recent trips-one to Jakarta, another to Singapore-I paid (maybe too much!) attention to how both countries handle immigration, hoping for that rare unicorn: a stress-free, single-step entry.

Jakarta vs. Singapore: Who Really Wins at Seamless Immigration?

Let’s talk processes. In Singapore’s Changi, the world-famous poster child for “immigration as a breeze,” here’s what actually happened: I joined the orderly line, scanned my passport at an automated kiosk, then stepped forward for a camera to snap my face and - new since COVID- a thumbprint. The whole thing takes maybe 1–2 minutes if there’s no wait, sure, but it’s definitely a two-stage process-scan, shuffle, scan again. There’s a helpful staffer nearby for the “lost in translation” moments, and the system does feel futuristic, but it’s not as automatic as the headlines make you think.

Cut to Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta: I slip my e-passport into the slot at the autogate, the glass doors close, camera flashes up for face recognition-and boom, green light, you’re done. One step, under 30 seconds. No shuffling ahead to a second checkpoint. Honestly, I was so startled I almost double-checked I’d done it right! It's not just slick, it's almost instant.  

Forms, Friction, and Speed - Who Makes Arrivals Easy?

Singapore gets points for the online SG Arrival Card, which is refreshingly simple IF you’ve done your homework before landing. But it’s still another website and a digital form demanding everything from your flight to your accommodation address, and even your recent travel history. If you forget, you’ll need to stand aside at the airport to fill it out.

Indonesia? The brand new Electronic Customs Declaration (ECD) is honestly a breeze. I filled it before boarding in under two minutes, zipped through with a QR code on my phone. The only catch-make sure your phone’s charged, as you might need to scan the code again at baggage claim. But overall, it’s fast, mobile-friendly, and doesn’t ask for your life story.

Truth Bomb: Why Does Singapore Still Win the Hype War?

I couldn’t resist polling fellow travellers about which place feels the smoothest. Now, here’s the wild bit: All anyone ever talks about is Changi’s world-class arrival.-with 89% of voters saying it offers the smoothest immigration experience, compared to just 5% for Jakarta, 6% for Kuala Lumpur, and 1% for others.

Why? Because Singapore OWNS its story. There are articles, TikTok videos, billboards about “Changi’s efficiency.” I’ve joked that I feel like a Formula 1 driver gliding into pit lane every time. Singapore brands their experience like it’s a new luxury gadget launch-and people repeat it, share it, believe it.

But on the ground? Jakarta’s one-step autogate is honestly faster and less clunky. No dividing your time (and attention) between two machines, no extra fingerprint drama. Yet, who’s hearing about Indonesia’s innovation? Hardly anyone. No trending hashtags, no travel influencer campaigns.

CX Lesson: The Best Experience Needs a Story

What can we learn? Jakarta shows us that removing friction-like single-step gates and snappy mobile forms-creates seamless journeys. Singapore proves that telling your story is just as powerful, turning their process into a global legend. In customer experience, what gets remembered and shared can be as vital as what happens at the gate. The “best” depends on what you value: raw speed, familiarity, or a story worth spreading.

  • Traveling through Jakarta made me rethink what “seamless” really means. I was out of the airport and into a Bluebird before my Singaporean friends would have made it to baggage claim.
  • Singapore reminds us that telling your story is as powerful as making it. They market the journey, not just the destination.
